One by one, my friends have asked me: Ramona, how do I start in affiliate marketing? They were impressed that this quiet grandmother can actually create cool websites. They saw that I was having so much in fun creating them that they asked me to teach them how to do it. Did I give them “Granny’s Guide to Affiliate Marketing? Not quite.
It is so much easier to create professional looking web sites today than it was 10 short years ago. I could tell you about my earlier attempt in website construction many years ago but I don’t want to bore you with the details.
If you want to learn how to get started in affiliate marketing, get yourself a cup of tea and I will tell you what I have learned about making money while writing about things you love.
The First Thing To Do Is To Create A Website Relevant To Your Passion
If you are going to venture into Afilliate Marketing, the best way to start is to choose a topic that you are passionate about. Maybe you are passionate about cats. Maybe you are passionate about classic cars. The key is to chose a topic that you love to talk about. This is known as choosing your niche. You will be writing quite a few posts on your website so it’s best to enjoy what you are writing about.
This is known as Blogging or Adding Content
Creating a website is not difficult. I personally use WordPress for all of my websites. To learn about how to create websites using WordPress, there are a lot of free tutorials online that you can read and watch.
Along with creating your website through WordPress, you will also need to acquire a domain name where your website will reside. There are a number of hosting companies out there where you can buy a domain name for your website. The cost of buying a domain name is fairly reasonable in cost (approximately $10 to $40 a year) and you can buy the rights to use that domain name on a yearly basis.
Researching Affiliates And Finding Relevant Programs
Once you have created your website, have added several posts of relevant content and acquired a web domain name where your website can be found, your next step is to find affiliate programs relevant to your chose niche. I will let you know right now that getting your website up and running will be accomplish over a several week period with consistent effort. There is a lot of work involved in the initial setup of a brand new website.
The majority of Affiliate Programs are free of charge. If an affiliate program wants you to pay upfront for the privilege of promoting them, I strongly urge you to do a bit of background search on the company to make sure that they are a reputable company and that they are not a scam.
Unfortunately, there are so many scam operations out there today.
Some very popular companies that offer Affiliate programs are:
Wealthy Affiliate (My Favorite)
The video below quickly shows the steps to promote Amazon products.
There are also affiliate networks out there that if you join them, you will be connected to thousands of affiliate programs that you can promote. Some of these networks are:
- Commission Junction
- Share a sale
Add Affiliate Links To Your Website
Once you have decided on what affiliate programs you want to promote, add the link that they give to you into your website making sure that the content of the affiliate link is relevant to your topic.
For example, one of the affiliate programs that I belong to is Wealthy Affiliate. It is a well established company that teaches its members all aspects of the affiliate marketing business. It has two different levels to get people started in their own affiliate marketing business. There is a free level or program and there is a premium level or program.
Did your see how I put my affiliate link in a couple of previous words and phrases?
Clicking the purple text takes you to the page where my personal review of the company is found. If a visitor thinks that the company is what they are looking for, they can then follow the link on that review page to get to the product they want. It is that simple to “Monetize” your website to make money. If someone buys a product or service through a link that is provided, the company pays a commission.
So now you have seen what text affiliate links look like. Along with text links, there are also visual ads that can take you to affiliate websites. These visual ads are usually placed in the side bar of your website or if you choose, you can place the visual ad somewhere within your main text. The way you want to promote the affiliate company on your website is totally up to you.
People that come to your website are looking for information. The goal of your website is to provide the information that they are looking for.
I cannot stress this enough. The adding of affiliate links should always be secondary in your priorities because people don’t want to be given a hard sell on anything. You are providing information and education. Earning commission is just a secondary bonus.
Choosing Topics To Write About In Your Posts
How does a person choose topics to write about in their respective niche? To choose topics, a person will need to do some keyword research. What are keywords? A keyword is a word or phrase that people look for in search engines when they want to look for information on a certain topic.
You have probably landed on my site because your were looking for some information on a search engine such as Google.
Prior to writing this post, I did my research on what keywords people typically type into search engines when they are looking for information on a certain topic. I put those exact keywords in the headline and in the first paragraph of the written post and that’s how the keyword became my topic for the day. I then wrote about what I know on that topic. Google with its little searcher bots finds the keywords and Google ranks my post according to the relevance of the search.
There is a lot of information online about how to do keyword research. Wealthy Affiliate has free courses on how to navigate keyword research. By investing some of your time to learn about using keyword research in determining the topics of your posts, your website rankings will be higher in Google and you will end up with more visitors to your website. The more visitors you have, the higher the probability that they will check out a link and if they purchase something through that link, you earn commission from that affiliate.
Checking Your Progress Through Google Analytics
Google Analytics is the best way to learn about the traffic (your visitors) that come to your website. By learning about your website traffics behavior, you have the knowledge on where you should make improvements in your website. The improvements will then bring more traffic to your website.
For example, say I have a website that has 10 recent posts or topics of discussion over the past month, Looking at the statistics, I see that three of my posts have had steady traffic coming to it while 7 of my posts have just a small amount of traffic.
Based on that information that Google Analytics has given me, I can analyze the topics the visitors were drawn to, I can also analyze how I set up the framework of those topics and as a result, I can then create new posts about the topics that people are drawn to.
It is better to create posts about things that many people in your niche are interested in rather than what only a handful of people are interested in.
Once Your Website Is Established Online
Once your website is established, you should continue to add content periodically to ensure that your websites Goggle ranking remains high in your chosen niche. Review your previous posts on a regular basis and update them as time goes on so that your information will always remain relevant to the person that is seeking the information.
When you are satisfied with your website, you can then start the whole process all over again with a new website focusing on another topic that you are passionate about. Remember not to abandon the previous websites that you established and you will reap the rewards by having multiple streams of income for years.
In todays post, I talked about the process behind affiliate marketing. I discussed how to choose a niche for your website, creating a website and getting a domain name. I also talked about researching affiliates and finding relevant affiliate programs for your niche.
