What Does SMART Goals Mean

If you have been in the business world for any length of time you may have heard the phrase “SMART goals” tossed around. It is an important task for Affiliate Marketers to write down their goals for their online business . But what does SMART goals mean?

What Does SMART Goals Mean

A SMART Goal Is An Acronym For A Goal That Is:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Time Related

Let’s explore the meaning of each word in this acronym one by one.

SPECIFIC

The goal has to be specific. There are five questions you need to ask yourself when creating each of your specific goals.

Beside each of my questions, I have placed in brackets an example of possible replies:

  • What goal is to be accomplished? (I want 500 unique visitors to my website weekly)
  • Who is accomplishing it? (I will be accomplishing this goal)
  • Why is the goal important? (It is important because the more unique visitors I get to my site, the more potential sales I get)
  • Which methods will be used to accomplish the goal? (I will be writing relevant, unique content on my website a minimum of two times a week)
  • Where is this goal to take place? (This goal will take place on my website).

Once you answered these questions, you can then write out your goal.

With the example given above, the specific goal will read:

“I will be having 500 unique visitors to my website every week. This goal is important because the more visitors I get at my website, the more potential sales I get. I will accomplish this goal by writing relevant, unique content on my website a minimum of two times a week.”

MEASURABLE

Your goal has to be measurable. To measure a SMART goal, you will have to identify what exactly you need to see in order to know that that your goal has been reached.

In the example above, the specific goal can be measured by reviewing the websites traffic data collected through Google Analytics.

ACHIEVABLE

Your goal should be something you know is possible to achieve within the time period that you select. Your goal should stretch you so that you feel challenged while working towards that goal.

Even though you feel challenged by the process of working towards your goal, you know you will achieve your goal through hard work. Achievable goals motivates people to put in that extra effort to realize their goals.

REALISTIC

The goal should be realistic. Realistic means that your goal is something that you truly believe you will be able to meet within the time frame you have specified.

TIME RELATED

Every goal needs to have a clearly defined time frame (a start date and a target date). If you don’t have a time frame, you will not feel the urgency to complete your goal and you are more likely to not work as hard as you otherwise would have.
