Amazon Associates Affiliate Program – Product Overview

Amazon was incorporated on July 5, 1994, and it is the worlds largest and most trusted online shopping destination. The companys’ reported operating income in 2016 was 4.186 billion dollars.

Amazon mainly promotes its online presence through its affiliates. There are some television ads that I have noticed especially around the holiday season but its brand name promotion goes a long way through its affiliates.

Once someone becomes an Amazon affiliate they can set up links to the category page or to the individual product that they want to promote. They can also set up a general Amazon link on their website so that a visitor can choose where they want to go on the Amazon website.

Links can be text links or banners. Amazon supplies the HTML codes for all of them.

The Good And The Bad

The Good: Sign Up Is Free

It is free to sign up as an affiliate. From my experience, it took a maximum of 10 minutes to sign up and I was on my way to making my first commission cheque.

Before you sign up, make sure you have yourself a professional looking and functional website. You will be asked about your websites and what products you are planning on promoting. You will be asked what is your average monthly traffic. If your website is new, don’t be afraid to put down your traffic as less than 500.

Amazon will not penalize you for that.

The Good: Well Thought-Out Control Panel

The control panel or the affiliates back office as I like to call it is very simple to use and Amazon has done everything it could possible do to make the navigation easy for Amazon Affiliates. The back office even has a section where they keep track of the earnings you make on your sales.

The Good: A Well-Known Company

Amazon is well-known worldwide and is trusted by online shoppers. Security is important for people shopping online and Amazon provides that security.

One thing I want to quickly point out. If you are promoting one particular item on your website and the consumer ends up buying another item instead of the item you were promoting, you will still get commission for that purchase as well as any other customer purchase that was linked to your affiliate link at that time.

This is a definite bonus as people usually have a tendency to purchase several items at one time when shopping online.

The Good: Choice in Link Customization

Affiliates have an option on how they want to display their links, display ads and banners. There are even interactive widgets that you can add to your website.

The Good: Huge Variety Of Products To Promote

There are approximately 1.6 million products that are being sold on Amazon. You can customize what you are selling according to what your niche is.

The Bad: Low Commission In Certain Categories

I have heard some affiliate marketers complain that Amazons commission payout on their items are too low.

At the beginning of March 2017, the rate of commission changed so that now commissions are calculated according to its category rather the total amount of sales that an affiliate made in a particular month.

The commission rate is capped at $15 for the high ticket items. My thought on this is that if you choose to focus your selling on the current low cost commission items then you will get low cost commission in returns.

The most successful affiliate marketers who promote Amazons high commission items are those that get the highest commission. The more relevant web traffic to your website, the more sales made and the higher the affiliates commission cheque is. It all depends on what a person focuses on.

The Bad: Unable To Receive Commission Through PayPal

At the present time, PayPal is not supported. Payments for affiliate commissions can be made through cheque, Direct Deposit or through an Amazon Gift Card.

My Final Opinion of the Amazon Affiliate Program

The Amazon Affiliate Program is the ideal affiliate program to join and I would strongly recommend that every affiliate marketer become an Amazon Associate as its range of products that its affiliates can market is so massive. From books to electronics to household items, there is something for everyone at Amazon.

  1. oh wow the Amazon affiliate marketing program sounds pretty amazing. After all heaps of people already shop on Amazon so why not jump on the bandwagon.

There are so many pluses with only one downside. Its a pity they don’t pay out by Paypal. Do you know if there are any plans to provide this avenue for payouts?

    1. Hello SJ:

I haven’t heard of any future plans for PayPal to be part of the payment options. I hope that they will consider it in the near future because so many people have a PayPal account. Only time will tell I guess.
